Anumpa-Wiki: An Online Choctaw Dictionary

This project is an ongoing, interactive dictionary for the Choctaw language. Our hope is that this initiative will help make Choctaw more available and useful to those who use the language.

If you are interested in helping with the construction of this project, please contact the system administrator: michael@e-chahta.com

The first priority of this project is to get as many Choctaw words on the wiki as possible. In the future, the project will work toward the following:

• An annotated and clickable (word by word) presentation of the Choctaw Bible
• Examples of Choctaw conversations with clickable glossaries
• Other Choctaw texts, such as reproductions of treaties and stories from old tribal newspapers
• Choctaw Hymns and other songs

Resources

Here is a Google copy of Byington's Dictionary of the Choctaw Language and the Choctaw New Testament:

Byington's Dictionary
Choctaw New Testament
Choctaw Pentateuch

Other resources:

Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma School of Language
Byington's Choctaw Grammar
Leitka, Eugene, Site Visitation: Choctaw Language Teaching Program Mississippi Choctaw Agency Schools, Philadelphia, Mississippi, August 7, 8, 1975
Byington's Holisso Anumpa Tosholi

The Dictionary and New Testament are LARGE files. They may take a long time to load. You might want to download them (right-click) to your own computer.

If you are adding words using Byington's Dictionary, please remember that the "dot under the a" letter should be written as a v, and the "slash L" letter should be written as hl (HL). Nasalized letters followed by a superscript "n" should instead be an underlined letter: e.g., miko.
